What Must I Do to Be Saved?
The question of salvation is one of the most important in the Bible. In Acts 16:30, a jailer asks Paul and Silas, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" Their response is clear: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." (Acts 16:31)
Faith in Jesus Christ
Salvation begins with faith in Jesus Christ. John 3:16 states, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Believing in Jesus means trusting in His sacrifice for our sins and accepting Him as Lord and Savior.
Repentance and Confession
Acts 3:19 urges, "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out." Repentance involves turning away from sin and seeking God’s forgiveness. Romans 10:9 further explains, "If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Confessing Jesus as Lord is a vital step in salvation.
Baptism and Obedience
While salvation is through faith, baptism is an outward expression of that faith. Acts 16:33 describes how the jailer and his household were baptized immediately after believing in Jesus. Additionally, living a life of obedience to God’s word strengthens one’s faith and relationship with Him.
